We were originally to be called, simply, the Guild of Gentry, but it was quickly obvious that this wouldn't do. Servants may be an integral part of the life of the gentry in 17th century Britain, but they can not be described as 'gentry'. Besides, we had members who portrayed aspects of some of the professions, trades and crafts of the period, and these were not gentry either. Hence we tacked 'and Allied Skills' on to our name, mainly because we could then use the initial letters of 'Gentry & Allied Skills' to refer to ourselves in private as the GAS Company (for an explanation of guild and companies click here).
